His Body, my body

- BY TERESA R. TUNAY, OCDS

Pardon me for sharing with you a rather personal matter but I do so only in the hope that you may learn something from it. When my women friends compliment me on ( what they perceive to be) my "slim figure" and boundless energy at my age, the first thing they ask is "Nag-g-gym kaba? Or zumba, diet, whatever?" I roll my eyes and tell them the truth: "What? With all the things I have to do I have absolutely no time for gym or zumba or whatnot!" "Then what's your secret? How can you stay so sexy?" (The word gives me the creeps-why are women so hung up on looking "sexy"?)

So I reply with a sigh: "Well, if you really want to know-it's probably my attitude towards my body in view of my vocation. I take good care of my body because I want to remain healthy in order to serve the Lord for life. Being healthy keeps me free to serve. If I were sickly I would just be focused on my ill health, spend time and resources on recovering my health, no more energy or time for my work of service. Taking care of my health means-when I eat, I stop before I'm full, believe it or not. It's not hard for me to do that because I am mindful of the famine people in other parts of the globe suffer. My conscience can't take that I'm overeating while others are starving. I believe that taking Communion-His Body-unites mewith Christ, and makes me constantly aware of His Body in my body. Conscious of that truth, too, I easily remember to respect my body, to listen to it, and not to abuse it by stuffing it with things that makes humans sick like bad cholesterol, alcohol, nicotine, etc.

So you see, being "slim"and "sexy" is not my goal, but rather an incidental reward.
