Today, April 18, is the 100th birth anniversary of the late Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee. Born in Manila, he graduated summa cum laude from Ateneo de Manila University and topped the bar exams in 1940. He was named justice undersecretary in 1966 and justice secretary in 1968. In 1979, Teehankee became an associate justice of the Supreme Court. He is remembered for being a devoted defender of the rule of law and courageous justice especially during martial law. Teehankee was appointed Chief Justice in 1986. He died on Nov. 27, 1989.
