To­day, April 18, is the 100th birth an­niver­sary of the late Chief Jus­tice Clau­dio Tee­hankee. Born in Manila, he grad­u­ated summa cum laude from Ate­neo de Manila Uni­ver­sity and topped the bar ex­ams in 1940. He was named jus­tice un­der­sec­re­tary in 1966 and jus­tice sec­re­tary in 1968. In 1979, Tee­hankee be­came an as­so­ciate jus­tice of the Supreme Court. He is re­mem­bered for be­ing a de­voted de­fender of the rule of law and coura­geous jus­tice es­pe­cially dur­ing mar­tial law. Tee­hankee was ap­pointed Chief Jus­tice in 1986. He died on Nov. 27, 1989.
