Higher Learning

Philippine Tatler Traveller - - Heaven on Earth - WORDS: MIA BORROMEO

Restored to its full splendour, the Monastic Library within the hallowed halls of the Baroque Melk Abbey in Austria is a sight to behold. Reading was a holy pursuit for the Abbey’s Benedictine monks through the centuries. Here, under a magnificent ceiling fresco by Paul Trogger, depicting the allegory of faith, the monks spent their days poring over books on theology, jurisprudence, astronomy, geography, history, and other subjects. Today, visitors to Melk Abbey can walk through the exquisite wood-panelled library and view the collection comprising around 100,000 volumes of priceless books and works including medieval manuscripts and numerous editions of the Bible that line the library shelves.
