The Department of Tourism’s Buhay Carinderia event has the local food scene up in arms

Philippine Tatler - - CONCIERGE -

The Philippine food community was thrown into an uproar in April of this year when the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) announced that the muchanticipated Madrid Fusión Manila was cancelled. In its place, the Department of Tourism announced Buhay Carinderia-Redefined which, according to the spiel, seeks to promote Filipino homecooking. However, the hard-sell way the event is being pushed does not sit well with the local gastronomic community who see it as more of a setback to promoting the wonders to Filipino cuisine overseas. While the TPB has backtracked and announced that Madrid Fusión is pushing through later this year, it is still pushing Buhay Carinderia—and the local food community wonders who its true beneficiaries are.
