The Depart­ment of Tourism’s Buhay Carinde­ria event has the lo­cal food scene up in arms

The Philip­pine food com­mu­nity was thrown into an up­roar in April of this year when the Tourism Pro­mo­tions Board (TPB) an­nounced that the muchan­tic­i­pated Madrid Fusión Manila was can­celled. In its place, the Depart­ment of Tourism an­nounced Buhay Carinde­ria-Re­de­fined which, ac­cord­ing to the spiel, seeks to pro­mote Filipino home­cook­ing. How­ever, the hard-sell way the event is be­ing pushed does not sit well with the lo­cal gas­tro­nomic com­mu­nity who see it as more of a set­back to pro­mot­ing the won­ders to Filipino cui­sine over­seas. While the TPB has back­tracked and an­nounced that Madrid Fusión is push­ing through later this year, it is still push­ing Buhay Carinde­ria—and the lo­cal food com­mu­nity won­ders who its true ben­e­fi­cia­ries are.
