Warm greetings to the librarians of our country on the celebration of this year’s Philippine Library and Information Services Month and congratulations to the sponsors of the 2018 Philippine Librarians Association National Congress.
Librarians are the silent partners of researchers of all fields—from arts and culture, creative thought, history, philosophy, politics, and all the sciences and technologies. They are the front liners in organizing data that people finally process and transform into various views, ideas, and things. Before computers became popular, they were also the go-to persons to retrieve information in books and other reading materials stored in libraries.
Digital technology has changed how people work. With data of al kinds being more accessible through the Internet, libraries are changing their systems. The work of today’s librarian is shifting from physically organizing and retrieving compiled data to using digital technology to locate information stored in various formats—whether in print, video or audio recordings, databases, or other digital configurations. It is thus necessary that todays Philippine libraries be equipped with these technological storage and retrieval tools and Filipino librarians be adept at using these information processing systems.
The holdings of libraries and the tasks of present-day librarians may have evolved with the times, but the value of both as agents of change remains the same. Libraries and librarians continue to be important helpmates of anyone who seeks knowledge from books audiovisuals, or electronically-generated data. Libraries and librarians have been and will always be significant factors in society’s transformation.
Mabuhay to the libraries and the librarians of the Philippines! GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO
