KEY CHAL­LENGES OF SCHOOL LI­BRAR­I­ANS: COP­ING STARTEGIES FOR SUC­CESS

A num­ber of re­search projects con­ducted have shown a di­rect re­la­tion be­tween a func­tional school li­brary pro­gram and in­creased stu­dent achieve­ment. This is in keep­ing with the aim of the li­brary to sup­port the ed­u­ca­tional goals of the school through a well-stocked col­lec­tion and pro­fes­sion­ally trained per­son­nel. Li­brar­i­ans teach in­for­ma­tion lit­er­acy skills that help stu­dents to be­come suc­cess­ful in­di­vid­u­als and re­spon­si­ble cit­i­zens of the so­ci­ety. Un­de­ni­ably, li­brar­i­ans work hard to prove their value to stu­dents, ed­u­ca­tors, ad­min­is­tra­tors, and par­ents. Although li­brary ser­vices have proven their pos­i­tive in­flu­ence in schools, many li­brar­i­ans ex­pe­ri­ence de­creas­ing bud­get re­sult­ing to low ac­qui­si­tion, in­ad­e­quate man­power, and poor fa­cil­i­ties.

To prove the worth of li­brary pro­grams, li­brar­i­ans must, in ef­fect, be­come strate­gic mar­ket­ing man­agers who in­cor­po­rate ad­vo­cacy ef­forts into their reg­u­lar ac­tiv­i­ties. This pa­per iden­ti­fies best prac­tices to in­crease the school li­brary’s vis­i­bil­ity in the com­mu­nity which can lead to op­por­tu­ni­ties to get the needed sup­port and fund­ing from stake­hold­ers. In ad­di­tion, the ses­sion guides par­tic­i­pants to cre­ate an ac­tion plan for li­brary ad­vo­cacy. Key­words: school li­braries; best prac­tices; li­brary mar­ket­ing
