A number of research projects conducted have shown a direct relation between a functional school library program and increased student achievement. This is in keeping with the aim of the library to support the educational goals of the school through a well-stocked collection and professionally trained personnel. Librarians teach information literacy skills that help students to become successful individuals and responsible citizens of the society. Undeniably, librarians work hard to prove their value to students, educators, administrators, and parents. Although library services have proven their positive influence in schools, many librarians experience decreasing budget resulting to low acquisition, inadequate manpower, and poor facilities.
To prove the worth of library programs, librarians must, in effect, become strategic marketing managers who incorporate advocacy efforts into their regular activities. This paper identifies best practices to increase the school library’s visibility in the community which can lead to opportunities to get the needed support and funding from stakeholders. In addition, the session guides participants to create an action plan for library advocacy. Keywords: school libraries; best practices; library marketing
