This paper discusses the development of academic research in the field of library and information science. It presents evidence and examples of the impact and value of LIS research to library transformation and service delivery. Discussion includes the research productivity in LIS, evidence-based research and service delivery, gaps between LIS research and practice, emerging LIS concepts and services, and impact metrics.
