Maja Salvador discovers what else she’s capable of.

Preview (Philippines) - - Chapter Eleven Cover Story - BY STEPHANIE SISON

Though she wasn’t a newbie in the modeling scene, Maja Salvador had just started to become a household name in local show business when she landed her first Preview cover. She describes her April 2010 cover as a “supermodel moment.”

On the once empty field where SM Mall of Asia Arena now stands, 21-year-old Maja stepped out in white designer cutout maillots paired with platform booties by Kermit Tesoro that had skulls sculpted on each of the heels. It was a contrasting narrative laid out by Creative Director Vince Uy: a young woman clad in pure white and ecru posing against a formidable Harley Davidson. Dealing with a theme that was out of her comfort zone, she naturally doubted herself. “’Nung nagsusuot na ako ng swimsuit, ’di ko alam kung kaya ko bang gawin. Pero because of the team, naging confident ako.”

Maja recalls her experience to be an easy one with photographer Jo Ann Bitagcol and Contributing Fashion Editor Liz Uy, whom she fondly called Nanay. She shares that knowing that everything was curated especially for her helped her ease into things, and eventually led her to feel comfortable despite her hesitations. “Sobrang naging special ’yung shoot kasi inisipan ng magandang theme, inisipan kung anong bagay sa akin.” She even says that the concept echoed Lady Gaga’s style, which resonated with her as she loved dancing to Mother Monster’s tunes.

For the cover, Maja wore a white maillot with nude cutouts, a huge trend at the time, by Rajo Laurel. And while she believed then that she wouldn’t be able to pull off the edgy swimsuit styles she wore throughout the cover story, the photos show otherwise. “Sa shoot na ’yon talaga, mas naging confident ako sa body ko.” Moreover, she says that because of it, she was able to gauge what else she could deliver at photo shoots and pictorials.

And who would argue that Maja hasn’t brought with her the confidence she gained and interest in fashion as she continues to grow in the industry? We’re still swooning over that backless Chanel gown she wore at the last Star Magic Ball. She’s definitely in tune with her body, her style and what else she can become by stepping out of the box every once in a while.
