At this point, it’s hard to imagine life without technology. Here’s something really unthinkable: a life without your mobile phone. I experienced being without my mobile for a full week. I was leaving Paris for home, and I unwittingly left it in the seat of the Uber we had taken to the airport. My saving grace was the ipad I had in my carry-on. Connecting to Wi-fi, I managed to use imessage and email my travel companions who were staying on longer about the incident, as well as my husband to coordinate a ride home for my near-midnight arrival. I was quite literally a bundle of nerves thinking about the important files stored in my phone, as well as what would happen when I landed. Imagine arriving at NAIA Terminal 1, where the Wi-fi signal stops at the baggage claim, not knowing how to contact the person who is meant to pick you up at the driveway. There were payphones, but no one, not even the lady at the help desk, could break my bill to give me coins. Thankfully, things worked out and I got home fine. I also managed to get my phone back. Janlee Dungca and Martin Castañeda of Castro PR deserve a shoutout of gratitude as they were the ones who managed to contact the driver (thank goodness for Uber’s efficient system), retrieve my phone from him (bless him for returning it!), and bring it back safely to me in Manila. Meanwhile, I got through my workweek with the aid of only email and Facebook Messenger as my modes of communication. It was liberating in that my world was a little less noisy and a little more focused without the usual calls and pings from Whatsapp. However, rather than claiming I was tech-free, I would say that it was the week I used all my alternatives and backups. It was still tech that saved me from the loss of a piece of technology. For all of you who, like me, enjoy gadgets aplenty and discover your who’s, its and what’s-its on the internet, this issue is for you. We have a roundup of inventions and innovations that answer fashion and beauty questions you have yet to ask, a pick of talented designers and beauty mavens who have stood out on our Instagram feeds, and our own imaginings of what the future might hold. From our cover star, Solenn Heussaff, who has kept it real as a celebrity in the very filtered age of social media, to online shopping like your favorite style icons (I’ll have the trackpants Aaliyah would’ve worn!), we give you Preview’s world of fashion and technology.
