The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), through Memorandum Circular No. 2018–01, has enjoined all government agencies, local government units, academic institutions, state university and colleges, and private sector to participate and support the celebration of the National Statistics Month.
Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 declaring October as the National Statistics Month, the annual celebration aims to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to different sectors of society.
Themed “Exploring Philippine Wonders in Numbers: Statistics towards Sustainable Tourism Development,” the activity is also positioned to elicit cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, through the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), has been initiating the statistical bulletin board competition among the departments, offices and district hospitals it covers.
Efren Bantad, National Statistics Month provincial focal person, said the contest is designed to also showcase the creativity and craftsmanship of Capitol employees especially in making their respective statistical bulletin board.
To promote creative solid waste management in their respective offices and hospitals, Bantad said employees are required to use recyclable and indigenous materials in presenting significant statistical data.
“Statistical bulletin boards are a vital platform to make the public well-informed of the functions and operations of these government offices,” he said, adding that “making this information available to public upholds transparency and accountability in the government.”
The criteria for choosing the best statistical bulletin board include content, relevance, appropriateness, documentary requirements, and overall impact. The judges, meanwhile, are composed of representatives from the PSA, academe, and media.
After the three-day evaluation which ended yesterday, winners for each category will be announced during the awarding rites on November 6. Provincial winners will compete in the regional level.
They will receive certificates and cash prizes. PPDO is also giving a special award for an entry that exhibits the most creative solid waste management practices./epn
