Stable supply of ‘tigkalalag’ products in Bacolod commands steady prices

- BY ERWIN P. NICAVERA

PRICES of some “tigkalalag” products sold at Bacolod City Central Market have remained steady two days before the observance of All Saints’ Day on November 1.

White variety of sticky rice or “pilit” costs P65 to P75 per kilogram depending on quality, while black or “tapul” is sold at P100 per kilogram.

Jonathan Bustillo, rice vendor, said there were no movements in the prices of the commodity since the previous months despite the expected increase in demand for the upcoming “undas.”

Bustillo said the stable price of sticky rice is attributed to the abundant supply of the product in the market sourced from local traders and millers.

In fact, it will no longer move until the actual day of “undas” tomorrow, he said.

“Unlike of the previous years, fewer consumers are buying sticky rice now,” the vendor said, adding that “it is already hard for us to sell up to 15 kilos a day.”

Meanwhile, a drop in the price of sugar was noted in the said market.

From P46 per kilogram last week, the price of brown and light brown sugar dropped to P44 per kilogram.

For washed sugar, a kilogram costs P52 or a decrease of P2 from the previous price of P50 per kilogram.

Another P2 decrease was noted per kilogram of refined sugar. From P64, it moved down to P62 per kilogram.

Vendor Gerlie Sumulong said there is also an abundant supply of sugar in the market.

Like sticky rice, Sumulong said they are expecting a steady price of the commodity within the week.

“In terms of sales, it has yet to pick starting October 31,” she said, adding that a decrease in the volume of buyers of sugar can also be noticed in this year’s observance of “tigkalalag.”*
