Senatorial bet banners labor causes

- BY CARLA N. CAÑET

SENATORIAL candidate and labor leader Leody De Guzman is pushing for the causes of the labor sector should he get a seat in the Senate in the 2019 elections.

De Guzman, chairman of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino, was in Bacolod City on Saturday for a rally at the Fountain of Justice.

They kicked off their campaign at Rizal Elementary School and made rounds at the downtown area.

He said there are five labor leaders who are running for senators.

“We want to push for permanent jobs and the implementation of an across-the-board wage for the people. The wages of the workers in Manila and in the countryside should be uniform and job opportunities should be made available for the 10 million jobless Filipinos,” he said.

He added, “price control should be implemented, too so the Filipino people will be protected from unregulated prices of basic commodities.”

As to the realities of “moneyed politics,” he said it’s true that money is necessary during the election, but they also believe that with enough number of the labor sector that can support them, he is confident of his candidacy.

“It will be the people who will campaign for us,” he added.

He is looking to help the jobless and the contractual workers in the province when he gets a Senate seat.

Cause-oriented groups have thrown their support to him, he added.

He needs 12 million votes to secure his victory and he hopes that the workers here will give their maximum support to him.*
