DPWH urged to help clean drainage

BACOLOD City Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to help the city government to check and clean the drainage system in various barangays.

Gasataya said the clogged inlets still caused floods in the areas of Lacson Street last week.

He said based on the report submitted by the DPWH, it showed that several wastes covered the inlets that caused the floods in the area.

“Our inlets were full of garbage so we need the assistance of DPWH to help the city to monitor the drainage to address the flood problem,” he added.

Gasataya noted the garbage was immediately removed by personnel of DPWH.

Last week, due to heavy rains, water quickly rose in Bacolod City especially at Lacson Street.

In April, clogged inlets also caused the floods in Lacson Street.

Engineer Ferdinand Magada, chief of Construction Section of DPWH, earlier said the drainage projects from Rizal to Mandalagan Bridge were already complete and they are only fixing some minor items.

The drainage project along Rizal Street going to Capitol Lagoon on Lacson Street costs P20 million while the one from Lacson Street towards Mandalagan Bridge is worth P35 million.

Magada said the old drainage lines were already connected to the new drainage line from Rizal Street to Mandalagan Bridge.

Gastaya also asked the DPWH to fast-track the implementation of additional drainage projects in the areas near the Histrip, Circumferential Road in Magsaysay Street and at the City Mall in Barangay Mandalagan.*
