Pioneering alumni association vows to help UNO-R Masscom
THE pioneering Mass Communication (Masscom) Alumni Association of the University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos (UNOR) in Bacolod City has vowed to help the department particularly in improving the facilities and increasing the number of students taking the course.
Its president Glazyl Masculino, who spoke at the oath-taking of the alumni association officers at the UNO-R Mass Communication Studio over the weekend, said they are eager to help the department.
Masculino, a graduate of Batch 2013 and now working as reporter of the The Daily Guardian and correspondent of Manila Bulletin, said this is also their way of giving back to their alma mater which she described as a home.
“This is the first-ever alumni association so there’s really pressure, but we, the officers, will do our best to help,” she added.
The officers took their oath before university president Rev. Fr. Don Besana, OAR.
Sunstar Bacolod city hall and police beat reporter Merlinda Pedroza, is the association’s vice president.
The other officers are Frances Doren Balaboa (secretary), Jiefden Rick Puntal (treasurer), Aljohn Christian Belera (assistant treasurer), Raymark Salvarita (auditor), Eden Thea Aboso and Dorel Cabatu (business managers), Girlie Carreon and Daisy May Nonato (Public Information Officers), John Kaye Delostrico (cultural affairs coordinator), Quena Marie Calansingin (religious affairs coordinator), Therese Amor Panzo (social affairs coordinator), John Dale Salazar (sports coordinator) and Shiela Gelera (alumni over all coordinator).
After the oathtaking ceremony, the officers discussed with Besana, Dean Dr. Annabee Magbanuaclaur and program head Dr. Nieves Pepito the organization’s plans.
These include the proposal for the alumni association to be registered with the Securities and
Exchange Commission.
They are also pushing for the possible facelift of the studio through the support of the alumni and the school administration.
Among other plans are fundraising activities like fashion show and workshops for students as part of the department’s marketing strategy to invite students to take mass communication course.
Besana, in response, said he is happy about the department and the college’s initiative in organizing the alumni association.
The university president welcomed the suggestions of the association for the improvement of the facilities and expressed optimism that these can be ironed out.
“Mass communication practitioners are really here to communicate, but we have to add another value to it and that is to communicate the word of God as well being a catholic university. We are here to also evangelize,” he added.
For her part, Claur said she’s really happy to see her former students who are now successful in their chosen profession and looks back to their home.
This is more of having love and gratitude to the school, she added.*
