Ilustre wins 2 golds in swimming qualifier

CAPAS, Tarlac -- Maurice Sacho Ilustre of De La Sallezobel ruled the men's 100m butterfly to claim his second gold medal on Monday in the 1st Philippine National Open Swimming Championsh­ips at the New Clark City (NCC) Aquatic Center here.

The three-time Palarong Pambansa Most Valuable Player awardee clocked 55.29 seconds to beat Rafael Barreto of Filforeign Team (55.32) and Mervien Mirandilla of Swimpinas (57.08).

Ilustre's first gold medal came from the 200m butterfly event. He also got the bronze medal in the 100m freestyle and 200m Individual Medley (IM).

Rosalee Santa Ana and Chloe Kennedy Isleta of Filforeign Team were the other double-gold winners in Day 3 of the tournament which serves as qualifier for athletes seeking slots in the national team that will compete in the forthcomin­g 30th SEA Games.

After winning the gold in the women's 800m freestyle last Saturday, the California­based Santa Ana topped the 400m freestyle in 4:26.29. Kirsten Chloe Daos of QCSC Buccaneers Swim Club (4:34.57) took the silver while Hannah Sanchez of All Star Swim Club (4:39.89) settled for the bronze.

Isleta, on the other hand, registered 1:04.82 to claim the gold medal in the women's 100m backstroke event. The silver went to Roxanne Ashley Yu of All Star Swim Club (1:05.25) while Georgia Peregrina of Filforeign Team won the bronze in 1:06.77.

Isleta pocketed her first gold medal in the 200m backstroke where she clocked in 2:18.38 to beat Yu (2:18.62) and Georgia Peregrina of Filforeign Team (2:22.46).

Meanwhile, Miguel Barreto of Ayala Harpoons Swim Club, Armand Pierre Chan of QCSC Buccaneers Swim Club (QBSC), Jimmy Deiparine of Filforeign Team, Joy Rodgers of Ace Seawolves Swim Club, and Camille Buico of Rising Atlantis Swim Club also dominated their respective events in the tournament organized by the Philippine Swimming Inc. (PSI) president Lani Velasco and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Bases Conversion and Developmen­t Authority (BCDA).

Barreto won the men's 400m freestyle event in 4 minutes and 03.58 seconds while his teammate came in second with a time of 4:03.93. Thomas Peregrina of Filforeign Team was third with a time of 4:07.56.

Barreto, who hails from Bulacan, had earlier won two silvers coming from the 1500m freestyle and 100m butterfly events.

Chan, who joined the

2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championsh­ips in Japan, finished the men's 100m backstroke race in 58.63 seconds. Phillip Joaquin Santos (AHSC) was second (1:00.32) followed by Manuel Victor Perez (Green Mariners Swim Club), who checked in third (1:00.78).

Deiparine, who was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, pocketed the gold medal in the men's 50m breaststro­ke with a time of 27.99 seconds. Samuel John Alcos of Ateneo Blue Knights Swim Club won the silver in 29.81 seconds while Rian Marco Tirol took the bronze in 29.96 seconds.

Rodgers, a silver medalist in the 2016 ASEAN University Games in Singapore, won the women's 50m breaststro­ke in 34.10 seconds. Thanya dela Cruz of Marikina Poseidon Swim Club took the silver in 35.21 seconds while Alyza Paige Ng (Unattached) won the bronze (35.88).

Buico, who won the silver in the 2016 SEA Agegroup Swimming Championsh­ips in Thailand, collected the gold medal in the women's 100m butterfly in 1:03.11. Regina Castrillo of PCA Stingray Swim Club won the silver (1:03.82) and Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh got the bronze (1:03.93).
