Negrenses told to give back with gratitude

-

NEGROS Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson urged Negrenses to give back, with gratitude, in honor of those who fought for freedom and peace as the province commemorated the 74th Negros Island Victory Day on Monday.

“To the present day Negrense, it is our obligation to give back in

gratitude, not in words but through our actions by being conscientious, active, and responsible members of our community and society,” Lacson said in his message during the program held at the Negros Occidental Multi-purpose Activity Center.

This year’s theme “For our Victory, for the Liberation and Freedom…our Veterans, We Owe Them!” highlights the Capitol’s tribute to the gallantry and patriotism of Negrense veterans who liberated the island from the Japanese Imperial Army during the World War II.

The governor pointed out that the fallen Negrenses and veterans never wished for war and would have chosen peace and freedom had they been given the choice.

“However, war broke out and they chose to fight so that the freedom and peace they also yearn will be enjoyed by the generations that follow,” he added.

For his part, Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer acknowledged the war veterans and their families and descendants for their sense of patriotism.

It is more than enough to provide safety not only to their own homes, but the whole province as well, he added.

Before the commemoration program, Lacson and Ferrer led the wreath-laying ceremonies held at the Monument of the World War II Veterans at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon and Park.

They were joined by Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, commanding officer of the Philippine Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade, and Col. Romeo Baleros, director of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, along with representatives of the Negros Occidental Historical Council, Veterans Federation of the Philippines, and Department of Education./pna
