Negocc guv eyes storage facilities for onions

- BY TERESA D. ELLERA

NEGROS Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson plans to establish storage facilities for onions amid the current soaring cost of the products.

Lacson also advised onion farmers in the province to control their production as the country continues to experience shortages, stressing that they should carefully make plans.

He said they are considering building storage facilities, although for now onion farmers should figure out exactly how many onions they should plant so as not to cause overproduction when harvest season comes.

He also pointed out that the Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA) has available programs that can be utilized by the local onion farmers.

The governor is also seeking consultations with farmer associations and cooperatives in Negros Occidental.

Lacson said he wants to know what is their position as well as the commitment they could give if ever the province decides to construct storage facilities.

The country is now experiencing a shortage in the supply of both red and white onions, with retail price reaching as high as P300 per kilo.*
