DOST-SEI to launch Nu­lab mo­bile sci­ence learn­ing fa­cil­ity to­day

THE Depart­ment of Sci­ence and Tech­nol­o­gy­science Ed­u­ca­tion In­sti­tute will launch and con­duct the first run of its new­est mo­bile sci­ence learn­ing fa­cil­ity, Nu­lab: STEM in Mo­tion, on July 17, Wednesday, 12 noon, at the World Trade Cen­ter in Pasay City. The event is part of the 2019 Na­tional Sci­ence and Tech­nol­ogy Week fes­tiv­i­ties.

Nu­lab aims to en­able the Filipino youth to dis­cover their po­ten­tial in the var­i­ous fields of Sci­ence, Tech­nol­ogy, En­gi­neer­ing and Math­e­mat­ics (STEM) and even­tu­ally take ter­tiary cour­ses and ca­reers along these lines.

The project also hopes to en­cour­age stu­dents to ap­ply for the DOST-SEI Un­der­grad­u­ate Schol­ar­ship Pro­gram through a strate­gic cam­paign called “#Push4­sci­ence: Mag­ing DOST Scholar Ka!” at the end of every ses­sion.

Nu­lab can ac­com­mo­date 24 stu­dents in one ses­sion and can hold two ses­sions per day. It has mod­ern au­dio-vis­ual and ed­u­ca­tional tools and equip­ment, lab­o­ra­tory fa­cil­i­ties and var­i­ous learn­ing ma­te­ri­als use­ful in in­tro­duc­ing con­cepts and de­vel­op­ing skills among them.

This is the se­cond mo­bile learn­ing fa­cil­ity of DOST, fol­low­ing the suc­cess of the Sci­ence Ex­plorer project which has served 32,000 stu­dents in more than 100 mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties all over the coun­try.

Sci­en­tists and for­mer DOST schol­ars, namely as­tro­physi­cist Dr. Ro­gel Mari Sese, ma­rine bi­ol­o­gist Dr. Aletta Yñiguez, en­to­mol­o­gist Dr. Aimee Lynn Dupo, Engr. Myra Ruth Poblete, Engr. An­gelo Javier, Char­maine Vil­lanue­vav­il­lamil, Pamela To­lentino, Ana Jamille Res­tubog, Jo­mar Raba­jante, Gilbert Zamora, Nico Men­doza, Garry Jay Mon­temayor, Sey­mour Sanchez, Ti­mothy James Di­macali, Shaira Panela, among oth­ers, de­signed the mod­ules for the Nu­lab ses­sions.

Nu­lab’s first run will fea­ture some of them fa­cil­i­tat­ing the mod­ules they have de­vel­oped with curriculum ex­perts to se­nior high school stu­dents from var­i­ous pub­lic and pri­vate schools.

DOST Sec. For­tu­nato T. de la Peña, Depart­ment of Ed­u­ca­tion Sec. Leonor Bri­ones and DOST-SEI Di­rec­tor Josette Biyo are ex­pected to lead the event’s rib­bon-cut­ting cer­e­mony.
