CAR snags 22-24-6 in PRISAA nat’l

Tae kwon do proves to be region’s gold mine

CORDILLERA athletes took pride in their respective sport events as they land the regional delegation to a decent finish in the recently concluded 2015 Private Schools Athletic Associatio­n National Games (PRISAA).

Bringing home a total of 22 gold, 24 silver, and 6 bronze medals, CAR-PRISAA athletes capped its weeklong performanc­e in the annual national sports race held in Iloilo City, April 12-18.

High school bets bannered the region leading the medal tally with 17-18-4 for fourth overall in the secondary division, while its tertiary counterpar­t salvaged 5- 624 to land number nine out of the 16 regional representa­tives from the entire Philippine­s.

Secondary jins generated much of the gold medals putting in tow a total of 8- 3- 1 from the taekwondo competitio­ns courtesy of gold medallists Ivan Murray Solimen, Troy Cayago, Khristian Daniel Mamitag, Angelica Joyce Gaw, Realis Lorena Tabiando, silver medallists Creamer Juris Quiambao, Emma Therese Bayubay, Mary Ceniza Quiambao, and Krisna Chaitana Liporada who gained third honors in the sparring competitio­ns.

Meanwhile the high school chess squad congregate­d 76- 1, from Jee- Ann Faye Barry, Engielyn Agamas, who also joined force with Kisha Ancheta and Shareena Kaye Barry for the top spot in the girls’ team event, while Marvin Limocon, Joshua Navarro, Hezekiah Reign Navarro, each generated bronze medals before joining Jeric Ivan Carbonell for a second place finish in the secondary boys’ team contest.

Starting in 2014, secondary sport competitio­ns were added in compliance to the memorandum agreed by PRISAA members to adjust and get ready for the changes brought by the Department of Education’s K to12 program.

In the tertiary race, Jay Lumyog of the University of Baguio led the athletics division copping the top spot in the 3,000 meter steeplecha­se, Melva Cawid ( 100 meter dash) and Janel Vinegas (javelin throw) pulled in one silver medal each.

Erwin Bong Generalao ( 10,00 meters) with the fourman team ( 4x400 relay) of Roy Duran, Cielo Denaflor, Rolly Rebelala, Patrick Bilches, and the fourwomen squad (4x100 relay) of Cawid, Rodlyn Fernandez, Angela Caronongan, Ma. Russel Rogel and the team of Padeway, Castylyka, Cawid, and Caronongan ( 4x400 relay) each salvaged bronze medals.

Over at the boxing contest, UB Cardinals Fernel Gaspi ( 49kg) and Renner Mitra ( 69kg) took one gold medal apiece as Restituto Odasing ( 60kg) and Harmon Jay Valdo (56kg) generated silver medals, while Chester Mark Pangod ( 52kg) and Samme John Catonco ( 64kg) added one bronze each.

In the lawn tennis tournament, University of the Cordillera­s Lady Jaguars Charrise Buccat, Maria Eminga, Mirriam Tumapang, and Laureta Mystica saved third overall in the team event, while Tumapang together with Laureta also added bronze in the women’s doubles.

Joane Esguerra and Karl Angiela Soria hit back to back gold medals in taekwondo, John Patrick Castillo added one silver, whereas Seven Garry Castellano, Ican Balinong, Isa Lyka Delos Reyes added three more bronze in the individual contest.

Close to 200 athletes and coaches who participat­ed in 13 out of 18 different sport events coming from the region bannered the flag of PRISAA-CAR to compete in the annual sports contest backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

This will be the lowest rank of PRISAA-CAR tertiary delegation since 2012 where they placed number eight with 3- 17- 16, followed by a consistent fifth place overall stint back in 2013 with 23- 9- 24, and 2014 with 20-36-24.

Other sport events the region tapped this year include basketball ( men and women), volleyball ( men and women), beach volleyball (men and women), sepak takraw, badminton, karatedo, swimming, and table tennis.

Already on its 59th year, PRISAA is committed to develop and harness the potentials of student- athletes, trainers, coaches, sports directors, physical education instructor­s, technical officials and other stakeholde­rs of member-schools for excellence in sports.
