Math wizards convene in Summer Capital

THOUSANDS of the country’s top math wizards gathered in the city for the 2015 Young Mathematic­ians’ in-House Intensive Training Program (YMIITP) on April 6-9 and April 11-14. This is the first time the YMIITP was held in the Summer Capital.

The YMIITP is the second phase of the Mathematic­s Trainers’ Guild, Philippine­s (MTG, Phils.) which is held annually. The first phase is the Mathematic­al Challenge for Filipino Kids Training Program (MCFKTP) or the 12-Saturday Training Program.

Participan­ts to the MTG, Phils. are determined through a qualifying exam slated at the start of the school year. Those who meet the qualifying score are eligible to enroll in the first phase. After hurdling several lecture sessions, quizzes and final examinatio­n, qualifiers will proceed to the second phase which is the YMIITP. Top scorers in the second phase will advance to the third and final phase of the training dubbed as Mathematic­al Olympiad Summer Training Program ( MOSTP). This is a month- long training aimed to prepare qualifiers for different internatio­nal math competitio­ns.

Owing to the large number of qualifiers this year, the YMIITP was conducted in 3 batches.

Batch 1 was held at the Crown Regency Hotel, Boracay on March 23-26. This was participat­ed in by more than 900 students from various public and private elementary and secondary schools from the Visayas and Mindanao area.

Batch 2 with more than 900 participan­ts from the Luzon area was held in different hotels in the city

namely Crown Legacy, Venus Park View and Pines View on April 69.

More than 1,000 participan­ts from Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog area comprised batch 3 and were housed at Crown Legacy Hotel, Venus Park View Hotel, Pines Econ Hotel and Brentwood Apartelle on April 11-14.

Among the twentytwo participan­ts from Baguio City, the following made it among the top finishers of the training program: Top Scorer for 7 - Medal and Sharp Calculator and Certificat­e, Andhrea San Gabriel - University of Baguio Science High School; Qualifiers - Medal and Certificat­e, Edward Jan Salao - Baguio City SPED Center - Grade 4; Erika Emmannuel Pantaleon - Small World Christian School Foundation - Grade 6; Miguel Sebastian Orille - Baguio City SPED Center - Grade 6;

Cheska Hufano - Philippine Science High School-CAR Campus - Grade 8;Therese TanBaguio City National High School - Grade 9; Alternates - Certificat­e of Merit, Rajan Bautista - University of the Cordillera­s - Grade 3; Margarette Ann Roales - Small World Christian School Foundation - G4; Andhrei Nicos Ancheta - Baguio City SPED Center - Grade 5; Russel Lumiqued - St. Joseph de Mary Learning Cen- ter - Grade 6; Justin Vizcara - Pines City National High School - Grade 7; Melchor Jr. Pimentel - Baguio City National High School - Grade 9; and Mark Navarro - Baguio City National High School - Grade 9.
