Teaching sportmanship towards victory

- By Merly Bolayo Claro

THE rigid preparation and performance of a contestant in every academic event is essential, coupled the respect towards others, the camaraderie and the spirit of sportsmanship, too. A challenger and the defender may ask, “What is the essence of participating in displaying one’s prowess in his chosen competition, and in doing his best to capture the highest?”

Truly, the reason why a contestant exerts all efforts and puts forth all his will and enthusiasm is the determination to win and bring home the victory. It is the winning that counts most. The achievement, fulfillment, prestige, respect, honor and fame will envelop in one’s being if he comes out victoriously.

A contestant also dreams of becoming the center of admiration of every spectator and the star of the scenario. When he wins, projection and different moods and gestures could be gleaned from his total personality. He may dis- play an aura of humility or otherwise. After winning the contest, he craves for higher level of competitions until he climbs the highest quest.

A good contestant is never contented with his past achievements. He should not rest on his laurels. He should continue to struggle and discover more of his hidden multiple intelligences, find out his weaknesses, and try to excel where he seemingly failed.

Sometimes a contestant fails to capture the gold medals, trophies and bundles of bucks. This should not rest on his laurels. He should continue to struggle and discover more of his hidden multiple intelligences, find out his weaknesses, and try to excel where he seemingly failed.

Sometimes a contestant fails to capture the gold medals, trophies and bundles of bucks. This should not prevent him from moving onward. He should stand with head high and with the conviction of performing better next time he faces his challengers.

When satisfied with the highest rank received, he bows down his head with humility; he waves his hands strongly to show victory head on. He offers thanks to God for the success.

The significance of a contest depends not on how high he soars as he marches to the throne to receive the prestigious reward, but rather on how he puts his mind, heart and soul in the event. The determination to bag the rewards is the motivating factor that drives him as he continues to paddle the rocky road to success. Thus in every game or competitions, sometimes we lose or win but life must go on , we must always be ourselves, humble and practical to accept difficulties and trials and most of all to practice and show the spirit of sportsmanship in any way.
