Dicksen, Mariñas bag individual honors in PVF
UNIVERISTY of Baguio’s middle blocker Carmela Dicksen and University of the Cordilleras’ Rudolph Stephen Mariñas held their own against some of the country’s best volleyball players and pocketed individual accolades during the 3rd Pedro R. Mendoza Memorial Cup in the city last week.
Dicksen was named as second best middle blocker in the weeklong PVF National Inter – Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Championship while Mariñas bagged the best server plum of the event backed by Hanes and Monolith Construction and Development Corporation.
Faith Nisperos of the National University was named the tournament’s MVP beating fellow Lady Bullpup Princess Robles who was named the best outside hitter even as Joyme Cagande took home the best setter award and 14-year old Mikaela Belenwas best opposite attacker.
In the men’s side, Adamson’s John Philip Yude was named MVP, even as teammate Leo Miranda was adjudged best outside hitter.
Other awardees of the four day event cohosted by UB were Mapua’s Alfredo Pagulong was 2nd best hitter, Adamson’s Paolo Publico (middle blocker), Daryl Valenzuela of NCBA as 2nd best blocker, Rence Melgar of Adamson (libero), and NCBA’s Lee Jumbo Nidua as setter.
The awardees from Arellano were Cherry Anne Buemia (libero), Jovielyn Prado (2nd outside hitter) and Andrea Marzan as best blocker.
Lyceum’s Cherilyn Sindayan was best server and Lyceum of the Philippines - Manila captain Cherilyn Jhane Sindayen was named best server.
The tournament named after its founder and former Philippine Volleyball Federation president Pedro Mendoza saw only saw six teams in the women’s side and eight in the men’s. It was also the smallest participation.
The annual volleyball championship, which is part of PVF’s grassroots development program, aims to create opportunities for students to showcase and enhance their volleyball skills. Roderick Osis
