Ex coach, local players to teach volleyball

-

A FORMER top coach now one of the country’s top volleyball umpire and some of his top players of not so long ago will help aspiring local volleyball players rev up their game starting June 12 until the 18th.

A week-long clinic and tournament will be featured in the ABCamp at the Lourdes Subdivision Ext. covered court with former University of the Cordilleras head coach Yul Benosa as main teacher and will be assisted by his former top players.

The week-long clinics, of five days, and tournament, of two days, will also see top local volleyball Cindy Benitez and teammate Michelle Remo teaching the basics to aspiring players 16 years old and younger.

“It will be a five day clinic and two days of competition where they can apply what they have learned,” said organizer Sherry Ann Floresca, also the coach of the UC High School volleyball team.

The first five days will be clinics of three hours from 9 AM to 12 noon, while the last two days will be for a competition where the participants will be divided into six players each, Floresca said.

Each team will have six players who will serve as setter, blocker and spiker or even utility or quick, she explained.

Medals and trophies will be given to the winning team and the players who made good for every position.

“Many are interested to learn but most clinics are quite expensive,” said the city champion coach. It is for that reason that registration fee is a mere P600 that include a free event tshirt.

“This is also exciting since it will be a reunion of sorts for players and their coach,” said the former libero who played with the two top open spikers who led UC to six straight crown from 2005 to 2010 and with Benosa as their coach.

“We have learned a lot from the past few years and we have learned a lot from our former coach and that we need to give back to players who want to play competitively,” she added.

Benosa is now one of the officers of the Phillipine Volleyball Federation wherein he is in charge of officiating. PVF referees, including himself, officiated the recent University Athletic Association of the Philippines where in the finals between the women’s teams of De La sale University and Ateneo de Manila, he was one of the main referees.

His group also handles the rival National College Athletics Association volleyball competitions.

ABC is basics, while camp is a place to learn and amp is to improve, which actually defines the clinic Floresca will hold with assistance from her team.

Registration is ongoing and players can join by contacting Floresca through Facebook. PR
