Netizens urged to be wary of social media use

- Jonathan Llanes

A GOVERNMENT agency called on netizens to limit post on Facebook and other social media platforms.

Department of Information and Communications Technology Assistant Secretary Allan Cabanlong during the launching of the Consumer Welfare Month in Baguio City, stressed parents should monitor the social media activities of their children to prevent them from being victims of various cyber crime offenses.

“With the advent of digital technology, hackers are ever more active in gathering and accessing vital information and credentials of each individuals active in social media which creates awareness and norms of the victims daily life, making them vulnerable victims of cybercrime”, the Assistant Secretary said.

The DICT is now in the process of strengthening its national cyber security plans with the creation of the Cyber Crime Investigation Coordinating Council which focuses on protection, prevention, enforcement of the law, aside from making appropriate government policies to combat against cyber criminals.

“At present, the DICT have identified its 12 national information structure which will help in the cyber crime protection and terrorism. It is government’s hope this will strengthen our cyber security like the implementation of the national E-commerce which guards against cyber threats to the economic infrastructure,” Cabanlong added.

Smart Communications head of external affairs Jose Rosete explained to combat against cyber crimes, there is a need to study and change attitudes on how social media is used.

“Although it may be intellectually liberating, we should still be responsible on how we use it,” Rosete added.

Rosete advised the relevance of being aware of what information is being sent on the internet to be protected from possible cyber crimes syndicates lurking on the net.
