DOT convenes artists for Creative Cities

DEPARTMENT of Tourism ( DOT) Regional Director Marie Venus Tan is set to convene artists in the city to talk about

the creative cities network.

Tan said an exsisting action plan has been made when the city vied for the United Nations Educationa­l, Scientific and Cultural Organizati­on (UNESCO) to be part of the Creative City Network (CCN).

“The plan was submitted to the Unesco when we applied, we will now empower the artist groups and gather them for their input.”

Tan said the city government should be tapped to help fund projects as well as the creative cities council needed to sustain the Unesco has bestowed own the Pine City.

Baguio is now among 15 cities in the world recognized in the field of craft and folk arts.

Tan said engagement with artists and the public is the aim in keeping with the theme of the CCN and make encounters experienti­al in nature for each one when going to industries of the arts and crafts in the city. The Unesco Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to promote cooperatio­n with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainabl­e urban developmen­t.

The city was included in the CCN network for loocal works of crafts and folk arts of the Cordillera­s inspired the various interplay of architectu­re, parks, textile, fabrics, furniture, and furnishing fashion accessorie­s, paintings, sculpture, homes and build- ing designs in Baguio City

Under UNESCO all creative cities commit to develop and exchange innovative best practices to promote creative industries, strengthen participat­ion in cultural life, and integrate culture into sustainabl­e urban developmen­t policies.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan as well as vice mayor Edison Bilog have both pledged support and sustain efforts of the city and the DOT to the UNESCO network.
