Magali barred from fighting on Feb. 10
THE GAMES and Amusement Board has barred Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super featherweight champion Carlo Magali from seeing action on February 10 to challenge WBC World super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt.
GAB acted swiftly on the request of Magali’s manager Brico Santig of Highland Boxing Gym in La Trinidad, Benguet to shorten the boxer’s rest period.
In a letter from GAB furnished to Sun.Star Baguio by Santig, the boxing and medical division of the agency did not allow in shortening
his boxer’s rest period of 45 days from his previous fight which he won by a 10th round technical knockout against Japanese challenger Masatoshi Kotani last January 13 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
GAB boxing chief Dioscoro Bautista in the letter said Magali’s last fight was not considered an easy fight or a light punishment and is not qualified for the shortened rest period.
Magali will be 17 days short of the 45 days mandatory rest period on Feb. 10.
Santig meanwhile said he respects GAB’s decision which will also help Magali to recover and hopes to get a new date for the championship fight against Berchelt.
The bout is slated February 10 at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico under the Zanfer Promotions of Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran.
GAB, however said it will help in processing Santig’s application should the fight be rescheduled and comply with the rules of the board. Roderick Osis
