Use of metal detectors in biz establishments, mulled
THE CITY Council passed on first reading a proposed ordinance requiring business establishments like malls, supermarkets, groceries, convenient stores, restaurants, night spots/bars and other similar establishments operating within the Summer Capital.
Authored by councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr., the measure states the move will be a means to curb crimes and other forms of violence inside the mentioned establishments.
It cites the 1987 Philippine Constitution which provides the maintenance of peace and order, protection of life, liberty and property, and promotion of the general welfare are essential for the enjoyment by all people of the blessings of democracy.
The proposed ordinance added news of violence in public place is becoming more and more common…today’s security devices such as metal detectors can detect any item that can be used as a weapon…the maintenance of peace and order and the prevention of crime is of primordial consideration… this legislative fiat is being advanced to help prevent the occurrence of crimes in public places.
If approved, the ordinance requires the establishments to install security metal detectors in their entrances that shall be a prerequisite in the application for new or renewal of business permits.
Those who fail to comply with the provisions of the proposed measure after due notice shall be fined P5,000. Gaby Keith
