School head as a supervisor
THE role of the school head is to create a positive ambiance of a school. Certain schools are happy and enjoy working effortlessly. On the other hand, particular schools are gloomy which both teachers and learners elude as much as possible. In some schools, when their school head is around, every teacher confine themselves in their room. And when the school head is away, it is “independence day” for them. In the first type of school, teachers like to be with their colleague sharing good-humored stories. They also enjoy being with their learners. In the second type of school, teachers have very few in common and likes to get away from their learners as soon as they can. The differences lies on how the school head deal with the people and sets the atmosphere for human relations.
The basic role of a school head in setting a positive atmosphere of a school is by respecting the dispositions of his teachers. It involves showing concern about them and to their problems. It also encompasses by learning to accept their suggestions. During staff meetings, show courteousness by giving each teacher an opportunity to voice out his opinions.
Reverence for behavior by the school head does not end with the teachers. He should also establish an example by respecting the individualities of every learner. Each child must be made to feel welcome and a part of the school. Each child must be treated justly regardless of ethnicity, religious affiliation and economic background. Each child must recognize that his desires in life were part in the development of the school’s undertakings.
A school head’s job is to become a listener at times when his teachers are undergoing emotional difficulties. Supervision is wider than providing what teachers need in the classroom. It goes beyond by extending a helping hand to teachers who have personal problems. No matter how often teachers were told not to bring their personal problems inside the classroom.
A wholesome environment of a workplace is affected by the genuine and unpretentious personality of the school head. The school head’s job is entirely dealing with people. Hence, his success depends on his ability to get along well with all the stakeholders.
How happy teachers would be if all the things mentioned are applied in all schools. How happy teachers would be if their school head acts like their second mom but woe to those teachers who have a school head who acts like the wicked step mother. Noreen T. Espenocilla
