Passion Week
CELEBRATING Palm Sunday. Jubilation. The triumphant entry into Jerusalem. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road (Matthew 21:8). “They took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet Him, and cried, Hosanna: blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (John 12:13).
Devotees celebrated Palm Sunday last March 25. It signifies the triumphant entry of Jesus to Jerusalem. At that time, “Jerusalem was said to be the center of the world and is where the only Temple was found.” Jesus entry to Jerusalem on a donkey brings peace to all. His acceptance as King and Messiah was evident by the people laying their cloaks and fronds of palm unto His pathway.
As we waved and had our palms blessed, we have also ushered Him into our hearts. The readings and Gospel talk of Christ’s martyrdom and humility. (Isaiah 50:4-7, Philippians 2: 6-11 and Mark 15: 139). Christ humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death even death on the cross! Palm Sunday also therefore signifies the fulfillment of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection.
Important days of Lent. Ash Wednesday, Feb 14. The beginning of the Lenten season. The wearing on the ashes on the forehead signifies repentance and believing and living the gospel; Holy Week March 2531.Holy Thursday, March 29. Celebrating the Last Supper, establishment of the Eucharist and commemoration of the institution of priesthood (Chrism Mass) with the symbolic washing of the disciples’ feet by Jesus. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament where the faithful remain in the presence of the Eucharist just as the Disciples kept a vigil with Christ. Good Friday, March 30. Commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus. Events on Good Friday are especially recollected in the Stations of the Cross. Easter Sunday, April 1. Easter is the celebration of Christ’s resurrection marking the end of Holy week, the end of Lent. Easter is the fulfillment of God’s promises to mankind.
In this busy world, may we constantly remind ourselves to have some quiet time to reflect. Whatever sacrifices big or small we have offered this Lenten Season, may it usher a better relationship with God by practicing and living our faith. Brenda Lee Villa nu eva (drbrendaleeavillanueva@ymail.com.)
