Only 20 CAR LGUs with approved 10 year solid waste management plan
OUT OF the 77 local government units (LGU) in the Cordillera region, only 20 was approved of their 10 year solid waste management plans.
The Environmental Management Bureau in the region during the weekly Talakayan sa Environment Code said the plans are already under review of the review of National Solid Waste Commission.
The approval of the 10 year solid waste management plans is under the Under the provision of the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which provides an ecological solid waste management program, creating necessary institutional mechanisms and incentives, declaring certain acts prohibited and providing penalties, appropriating funds and other purposes.
According to Ricardo Dang-iw, chief of the Solid Waste Management section of EMB-CAR, the solid waste management plan contains financial aspect, as mandated in the law including the managing of at source segregation and use of alternative ways in addressing wastes.
EMB-CAR said 23 LGUs’ plans were conditionally approved due to the lacking of the plan, and 26 plans are under review.
“We expect that the plans of our target will be approve because this is the start on how to comply in the Republic act,” said Alex Luis, chief of Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division EMB-CAR.
