The learners yesterday, today, and tomorrow

- Fernando C. Bagayao

WHAT makes the learners today differ from the learners yesterday?

Many teachers and parents used to say that children of school age before are more responsible and diligent in their studies as compared to learners today wherein most of them are taking their studies for granted. They also testify that learners yesterday were more independent and find ways to earn for their extra- living during their vacant period as compared today that learners purely dependent from their parents. Speaking also of their behavior, very few among our students today sincerely practice good manners and right conduct unlike students before who bows to their teachers, parents and elders.

These observations which are then evident can simply called “environmental changes”. Perhaps, these changes is definitely caused by our changing environment. Nevertheless, we can minimize the effect of these “changes”. As member of the education sector. I can say that learners today doesn’t differ from learners yesterday. It is within the family that shows a big difference. I observed that most of the parents today focus on their work but less time to mingle with their children. Focus on their business but less time to attend the parental and scholastic needs of their children. Relied the education of their children to the teachers but find difficult time to dialogue with the teachers too. These are among the many root causes of the changes we notice from our learners today as compared from yesterday.

Does parents today still can do something to bring back the glory of yesterday? I can’t just imagine of having a learner full of wisdom and virtue. But I believed we can still do a lot. What if we will treasure our own culture and live with it? What if we will treasure the virtues living of our ancestors and practice it in our own? What if we will compliment with the teachers and school for the effective education of our children? What if we will devote a lot of our time to tell stories with our children and to review some of their school notes? And many more….think it over.
