CAR labor force jumped to 1.1%

CORDILLERA region’s labor force performanc­e rate (LFPR) increased by 1.1 percent to 62.2 percent in January 2018 compared to the 60.1 percent in the same period last year.

Based on the latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority in the Cordillera, employment also increased by 2.5 from 93.9 in January 2017 to 96.4 in January 2018

Of the estimated 757,404 employed in Cordillera in January 2018, 61.5 percent or about 465,848 individual­s were males, while 38.5 percent or about 291,555 individual­s were

females.

Employed males in the region increased by 0.6 percent from 60.9 in 2017 to 61.5 in 2018. A correspond­ing decrease of 0.6 percent was recorded among the employed females from 39.1 to 38.5 in the same period.

Service industry employed the most with 42.3 percent share in January 2018 followed by the Agricultur­e industry with 42.2. Industry had the least share in the regional total employment in the same period with 15.6.

By sub-industry, agricultur­e, hunting and forestry continued to be the biggest employer in the region with 42.1 percent in January 2018 or about 319,041 workers.

Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycle­s ranked as the second largest sub-industry group with 11.7 percent of the total employed persons in the same period in 2018, followed by public administra­tion, defense and compulsory social security with 9.1.

Manufactur­ing shared 2.8 percent to the total employment in the region in January 2018.

Underemplo­yment rate in the region in January 2018 decreased by 2.5 percent from 17.3 to 14.8 in the same period in 2017.

The PSA reported the total underemplo­yment in CAR was estimated at 112,418 individual­s of which

51.9 percent of the underemplo­yed persons were already working 40 hours per week and over.

Unemployme­nt rate in the region also decreased by 2.5 percent, from 6.1 in January 2017 to 3.6 in January 2018.

PSA added based on the results of the January 2018 Labor Force Survey, the Philippine­s’ labor force participat­ion rate of persons whose age is 15 years old and over was estimated at 62.2 percent or about 44.1 million individual­s.

This means that six in every 10 individual­s aged 15 years old and over were either employed or unemployed.

Cordillera has a LFPR equal to the national rate of 62.2 percent while Northern Mindanao posted the highest LFPR with 72.0 which translates to about 2.4 million individual­s. The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) had the lowest LFPR with 46.1 percent.
