LMD invites students for mardi gras celebratio­n

AROUND 1,400 Elementary and Secondary students of Lepanto National High School and Lepanto Elementary School were invited by the company to participat­e in Christmas Parade/Street Dancing and Lantern Contest in Celebratio­n of Mardi Gras last December 3.

An Amount of P94,000 from Lepanto Mining Company is at stake for the winners of the street dancing and lantern Parade. Guidelines for the activity and the criteria for judging was provided by the company with a theme, “Bringing to Brighter a Community”. The participan­ts for the contest were categorize­d. Category 1 for the secondary level (per grade) and category II for the Elementary level (Per grade).

Mardi Gras is a French word for “Fat Tuesday” and it refers to events of the carnival celebratio­n, beginning or after the Christian Feast of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminatin­g on the day before Ash Wednesday. It is often observed with parades and merry making. It is celebrated in many countries around the world-mainly those with a large Roman Catholic population on the day before the religious season of Lent begins.

The results of the contest for category 1 were First Place-Grade 10 with a prize of P14,000; 2nd placeGrade 8 with a prize of P12,000; 3rd PlaceGrade 9 with a prize of P10,000 and 4th PlaceGrade 7 with a prize of P8,000. For category II1st Place- Grade 3 (Prize P11,000); 2nd Place –Grade VI (Prize P9,000); 3rd Place – Grade IV (Prize P8,000); 4th PlaceGrade 2 (Prize 7,000); 5th Place- Grade 1 (Prize P5,000); 6th Place – Kindergart­en (Prize P4,000) and 7th Place – Grade 5 (Prize P4,000).

Amidst hot weather, the students enjoyed the parade with their creative costumes creating different noises and dancing on the streets welcoming Christmas season. The community as well cheered and applauded the dancers. The Christmas Parade in the morning was followed by Christmas tree and Lepanto Tunnel of Lights lighting at six o’clock in the evening.
