- Arlene Ago

NICOLE Jane Denis smashed a gold medal in badminton at Balakbak in Kapangan, Benguet on Oct. 2 to 5.

Denis is an athlete of Beleng-Belis Barrio School and a badminton player on singles Bracket A. She first won in her first game and then lose in the second game. With a short interview with her, she said she had mixed emotions and hid her tears thinking that she might not be able to do it. With the encouragements from her coach, teachers, and schoolmates, she was enlightened.

While other players were playing, she watched them intently to find their weaknesses. The saying “patience is the key to success” came into her mind wherein she patiently stopped the shuttlecock without smashing for sure. In her third and fourth game she won which resulted to a rematch. She got the first and emerged champion.

At first, she was hesitant to play badminton because she was chosen to play chess but playing with the badminton players made her realized that she is destined to be a badminton player.

“Finally, I am happy that I am qualified for the Provincial Meet before leaving BelengBelis Barrio School. Should have I known so that I have started playing badminton when I was in the lower grades. I cannot describe my feelings with an answered prayer,” Denis said.

“My parents are very grateful, too. Their full support and words of encouragement are my inspiration. Studying in a barrio school has no difference in studying in a big school. It is the training that matters most.” She added

Denis continues to encourage her schoolmates to choose an event they like most. The achievement of Denis gave inspiration to the pupils of Beleng-Belis Barrio School. Free time were utilized for practice and training for badminton. She continues to train future badminton players as she prepares for the upcoming provincial meet.

With the success of Denis, teachers give pieces of advice that sports and studies should be balanced. Acquiring both disciplines is an advantage.

Lastly, sportsmanship and gaining friendship were learned by the Beleng-Belis Barrio School athletes during the district selection meet.
