After a hard day’s night

- Joei Beatrix Bautista

AFTER working like a dog, you need to sleep like a log. We all need sleep. Studies show the benefits and importance of having regular sleep. Adults are supposed to have at least seven up to nine hours of sleep.

So, what makes sleep important? The reason doesn’t merely revolve around getting over tiredness and fatigue. According to several health sites, such as Medical News Today, one’s health is also tied together with getting consistent and proper sleep. This includes enhancement of the immune system and your brain to work properly and be more creative with solving your problems. Getting enough sleep would improve your mental health and reduce anxiety, depression and other mental health problems. Lack of sleep would lead to mood swings and, according to the National Health Institute, research showed that people who lacked sleep could cause weight gain. It was also observed that more than 1,500 deaths a year in the United States are caused by drivers falling asleep behind the wheel.

An article of Erin Streeman on My TJ Now, the Winthrop University Student Newspaper, gave tips of how to get better sleep. It is recommended that devices shouldn’t be used before you sleep as the blue lights of your mobile devices can strain your eyes, which the Harvard Health Publishing site also mentioned. Streeman also mentioned that people should exercise regularly to have better sleep. It was also mentioned from the Business Wire website that 30 minutes of exercise daily would correlate to 14 additional minutes of sleep. Finally, it is recommended to keep your bedroom dark, quiet and cool. As recommended by EWU Health, Wellness and Prevention Services site that 15 to 19 degrees Celsius is the ideal temperature for a bedroom when you go to bed. This is because it would allow you to sleep with a weighted blanket which, according to Science Translational Medicine website, would let you improve your sleep as well as help comfort those suffering from insomnia and anxiety.

Sleep is such a simple thing to do yet it improves a lot of factors in our health. Since health is very important to us, we should include this as part of our priorities instead of just something we do on our spare time. After a hard day’s night, invest in your health. Sleep tight!
