Corpus bets rule chess eliminations

-

CORPUS Christi School topped the 2016 Cagayan de Oro South District Chess Meet concluded here yesterday at the South City Central School’s admin office in brgy. Nazareth.

Newcomer Lance Rafael Magloyuan defeated Jter Doseck Jumawan of Camaman-an Elementary School and Paulo Jerico Jumalon of Xavier University Grade School in the extended elimination games on Friday morning to secure a slot in the coming City Division Meet in the company of fellow Corpus Christi bets Cressler Bruce Gabing, David Rey Ancheta and Richily Evanz Cuizon.

Public school players, however, shared the spotlight in the shortest ever selection for in-school chess talents in the locality that needed just four rounds.

Mary Grace Pabillaran of Macasandig National High School shocked Bea Sophia Dupa of Corpus Christi, despite playing with a pawndown disadvantage, to join Angela Lapore of Cagayan de Oro City National High School in the next meet.

Shelanie Catian of host South City Central School also qualified when she drew with early favorite Joseayn Albasin of Oro Christian Grace School and conquered Cuizon in the final round.

Cuizon was lucky to make the cut after a better tiebreak results among the 3-point finishers in elementary girls level.

Completing the chess qualifiers is Timothy Robert Mutia of the Oro Christian Grace School who placed second behind Gabing in the secondary boys division after the tiebreaker.

“Alright, we can agree nga short kaayo ang proseso sa atong chess elimination. Pero, wala may nag-reklamo during our solidarity meeting with the coaches,” arbiter Lorenzo `Jun’ Cuizon told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
