Ate­neo de­fends UAAP crown

ATE­NEO de Manila Univer­sity (AdMU) suc­cess­fully de­fended its crown in the Univer­sity Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion of the Philip­pines men’s bas­ket­ball af­ter a con­vinc­ing 99-81 win over Univer­sity of the Philip­pines (UP) in Game 2 at the Araneta Col­i­seum on Wed­nes­day, Dec. 5.

The Ea­gles im­me­di­ately took the early lead with a 25-13 ad­van­tage af­ter the open­ing quar­ter. UP fought back and had a good sec­ond quar­ter and trimmed the lead down to 11 at half­time, 48-37.

AdMU dom­i­nated the third quar­ter and led by as much as 18 points be­fore the Fight­ing Ma­roons cut it down to 14 points at the end of the third with back-to-back bas­kets by MVP Bright Akhuetie and Javi Gomez de Li­año.

AdMU, how­ever, started the fourth quar­ter hot with a 9-2 run for a 79-58 lead from a three-pointer by Thirdy Ravena.

Juan Gomez de Li­año, Ce­buano Paul Deside­rio and Akhuetie tried their best to keep UP alive but Ravena was un­stop­pable. Ravena ex­ploded for 38 points, shoot­ing 13 of 19 from the field and hit­ting five of eight from be­yond the arc.

Kouame logged a dou­ble­dou­ble of 22 points and 21 re­bounds along with a steal and two blocks.

Raffy Ver­ano added 11 mark­ers and seven boards. Juan Gomez de Li­año led UP from off the bench with 24 points, eight re­bounds, three as­sists, a steal and a block.

Akhuetie had 19 points, seven re­bounds, a steal and a block, while Deside­rio added 15 points, seven re­bounds, three as­sists, two steals and a block. Javi Gomez de Li­año also chipped in dou­ble dig­its with 11.
