Growing Your Own Food

Alot of people want to grow their own food but are clueless where to begin. Growing edibles take time and practice but with a little bit of knowledge and patience, it’s possible to grow much of your produce. Here are a few tips and tricks for growing your own jungle of staples at home.

Start small with a container garden.

Limited space at home is never a problem. You can always start growing your own food plants with containers as there’s quite a selection of herbs, vegetables and fruits that grows well in them.

Take the time to plan.

Fruits and vegetables have their natural season. This means there’s a best time to plant them. Make sure that you have a calendar or journal where you can plot the perfect season for sowing and harvesting.

Learn about soils.

Knowing your garden soil will help you determine what’s appropriat­e to use for a certain produce. Each soil type comes with different properties and it’s important to know them to get the most from your garden.

Enrich your soil.

Compost and fertilizer­s are a gardener’s best friends. You can enhance your soil with compost and feed your plants with fertilizer.

Know your planting method.

There’s an appropriat­e planting method for every type of food you’re growing. Before you start sowing, an adequate knowledge of the various methods of planting will be beneficial.

Gather the right garden tools.

You won’t need an entire shed of tools for every type of plant you plan to grow. All you need are five essential gardening tools like a trowel, pruning shears, watering can, garden rake and an angled shovel to get the job done.

Water plants as needed.

Gardening takes time and your plants will need all the TLC they can get. Watering your plants diligently or as needed will help them with photosynth­esis and eventually grow food for you.

Harvest timely.

Some crops are happy to wait on the ground or on the plant while others are tastier when harvested immediatel­y. Just remember to keep a close eye on your ripening plants and decide from there when the best time is to harvest.
