Working It Out

- Alexis Yap

I remember a time in my life when I would consider myself a gym rat. Generally, I was always curvy and voluptuous. But sometimes (and I consider these years my glory years) when the mood strikes, I get into the “zone” and become a health freak. My neck is at its longest, my stomach almost flat, my arms and legs reasonably toned, and my skin ever so glowing! Oh, how I miss my glory days...

Last month, my favourite gym Citigym at the Waterfron Cebu City Hotel and Casino celebrated its 6th anniversary and I promised Julia Siscar (Marketing Manager) and Anne Manubag (Program and Fitness Director) that I was definitely coming to party with them. I haven’t gone to the gym in over a year already and thought it was the perfect time to rekindle my passion for health and wellness. As most of you who know me and has seen me lately, it is clear that I haven’t been exactly as diligent in working out!

I miss working out at Citigym so much. For me it is the best gym in Cebu because of so many reasons. First, they are open 24hours everyday and they have free covered parking. Second, the staff is friendly and welcoming. They greet you with a big smile as you walk in.

The use of hand towels and bath towels are free for all its members so I never have to bring a bulky duffel bag whenever I go. There’s a cold water dispenser for all the members. There’s the Powerhouse Bar where members have a wide selection of healthy drinks and snacks. I get to use the pool and do my laps anytime I want. The members are courteous and considerate with each other and everyone end up being good friends and treat each other like family. That is what I miss the most.

Membership includes free use of the sauna and steam room. Showers in the locker rooms are equipped with hot and cold water. They keep the area always clean. Members can also join in in any of the many fun group classes including spin, yoga, zumba style latin, hip hop, cardio kick-boxing, outdoor ashtanga yoga, beach body, strip tease and many other combination classes that break away from the usual treadmill.

Nowadays, I find myself always saying how I wish I had the time to go to the gym despite my busy schedule. But as my trainer would say, “You can always MAKE time to go if you really wanted to.” Ouch! True enough. Maybe I should make that decision to start working out again. Not just for a better body but most importantly to promote better health.

Many people make New Year’s resolutions that they strive to keep. As I start a new year for myself tomorrow, I pray for the strength to drag my fat ass to the gym and start eating healthy again. That would be the perfect birthday present I could give to myself. I hope it works out.
