Kalunasan marks founding with mango fest, dancing

-

THE Mangga Festival of Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City opened last Monday with officials’ hopes that it will bear fruit.

Residents launched the festival with street dancing, a ritual dance contest, fireworks display and disco.

The festival is the highlight of the 77th founding anniversary of Barangay Kalunasan.

Local officials, led by Barangay Captain Nunilon Monares Jr., said the festival is not only a tribute to hard-working mango growers, but also promoted Kalunasan mangoes.

Several areas in the hilly portions of Kalunasan are planted to mangoes.

Village officials said the festival shows the struggles of mango growers in the area, so one of the activities is a ritual showdown.

Nine contingents from the barangay’s 32 sitios participated in the contest. Tribu Kauswagan from Lower Kalunasan landed first place and went home with a cash prize of P10,000.

Monares said the barangay intends to continue the festival, which was welcomed by residents.

“Makalingaw gyud ni,” (This is really entertaining),” he said.

He thanked other local officials and residents who made the celebration possible.

He said next year’s festival will be better and bigger than this year.
