‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Apes’ take Saturn Awards

Films Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Super 8 were the big winners at the 38th annual Saturn Awards, taking three prizes each.

The awards, touted as the Oscars version of the awards in this genre, were presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

Apes won the plum honor, best science fiction film, as well as the best supporting actor award for Andy Serkis and best special effects. British actor Serkis, 48, played the lead ape, Caesar, in the film.

Super 8 won for best director (J.J. Abrams), best performanc­e by a younger actor (Joel Courtney), and music, said The Hollywood Reporter.

For television, Breaking Bad was the big winner, taking in honors for best syndicated/cable TV series, best actor on television (Bryan Cranston) and best supporting actor on television (Aaron Paul). The other winners for film were Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, best fantasy film; The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, best horror thriller;

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, best action/ adventure film; Take Shelter’s Michael Shannon, best actor; Melancholi­a’s Kirsten Dunst, best actress;

and The Adjustment Bureau’s Emily Blunt, best supporting actress.

The best animated film was Puss in Boots, while the best internatio­nal film was The Skin I Live In.
