Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr.

BACK in high school, Gerald Anthony “Samsam” V. Gullas Jr. wanted to be a profession­al basketball player. At 27 years old, Samsam is playing a different ball game. Come 2013, he will replace his grandfathe­r, Cebu Rep. Eduardo Gullas, as congressma­n of the first district of Cebu. He is running unopposed in the elections.

Samsam hopes to be remembered by his constituen­ts not just for his last name.

Academic and leadership feats gird the political neophyte for the tasks ahead.

Samsam graduated with honors during his baccalaure­ate studies at the Centre for Internatio­nal Education. And he was a Presidenti­al Awardee for Academics and Excellence of then president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

A management major, Samsam is assistant vice president for administra­tion and finance at the family-owned University of the Visayas. He is also working toward a master’s degree at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business. Justin K. Vestil
