Lianne Sala
“It’s about bringing social justice to the youth.”
VIOLINIST Lianne M. Sala, 27, hopes to reach out to people through music. This she aims to achieve as she spearheads the establishment of El Sistema for Cebu, a music outreach project patterned after a worldwide movement.
“It’s about bringing social justice to the youth. El Sistema, which originated in Venezuela, will give kids music lessons every day for free, to keep them away from gangs and trouble,” Lianne said.
Lianne said El Sistema for Cebu will begin in March 2013 with a batch of 60 children. Provided with instruments, they will be taught choir and violin lessons for three hours each day.
Lianne learned to play the violin at the age of five at her family’s music foundation.
Prior to pursuing her El Sistema studies abroad this year, Lianne gave violin lessons at the Salvador and Pilar Sala Foundation and in other local institutions.
For four months, Lianne immersed herself in El Sistema communities in North America, with the vision of bringing home the philanthropic movement.
More than helping the Filipino youth, Lianne foresees El Sistema for Cebu to be a training ground for music teachers who would likewise impart the love and passion for music in other parts of the country. Fiona Patricia S. Escandor
