Sevillano rules Lapu-lapu Kiddies Chess Open

SHELL National Kiddies champion Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano once again proved he is the best 15-year-old player in Cebu as he took home the Lapu-Lapu City Fiesta 2012 Kiddies Open Chess Tournament.

Sevillano (2046), who is poised to follow in the footsteps of his Grandmaste­r uncle Enrico, once again proved his domination in the local scene after collecting a total of 6.5 points after the final round of the Round 7 Swiss System tournament. Forty players joined the event.

The University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department top board player Sevillano, the top seed in the tournament, defeated his first four opponents before mellowing down in the last few rounds when he settled for a draw with sixth seed Jeremy Pepito.

Lapu-Lapu City’s best Kiddies player Allan Pason (1950) got second place with 6.0 points, while fourth seed Christian Klent Pondoyo (1814) and Pepito (1802) shared the third and fourth places after scoring 5.5 points each. Jonas Dustin Bajo (1693) got the solo fifth place with 5.0 points.

Those who shared the sixth to ninth places were Ariel Joseph Abellana, third seed Aldritz Pondoyo, Duane Borgonia and Jethro Ysmael Claro. They all had 4.5 points.

Laila Nadera, Lyan Portes, Raff Glen Bensi, Jerish John Velarde, Grant Daniel Picondo, Mark Brian Fornolles, James Francis Paraon, Joshua Almacin and Jasper Ycog all had four points each after seven rounds.
