Safer highway

-

TO our beloved Rep. Eddie Gullas: You are initiating another four-lane highway, this time from Naga City to Carcar City. But please make our highway from Talisay City to Naga City safer for your constituents.

A teacher in Naga City lost her husband when he was hit by a passing vehicle while crossing the highway.

Two friends in Pakigne, Minglanilla lost their lives when a tanker rammed them while they were crossing the highway at night.

A young lady lost her life in Tuyan, Naga City when she was hit by a vehicle.

Around 13 lives were lost when a mini bus from the south collided with a trailer truck at the vicinity of the South General Hospital in Tuyan, Naga City.

My parents also experienced accidents on this highway on separate occasions in Naga and Minglanilla. I'm thankful they are still alive.

These accidents could have been avoided had we built highways that are safe for vehicles and pedestrians.

Since you are the father of the 1st district of Cebu and acknowledge road construction as your flagship projects, you have the power to initiate road improvements.

The following are the modifications needed if this highway (Talisay City to Naga City) were to be made safe for pedestrians and vehicles:

--A center island should be constructed to prevent vehicles in opposing lanes from colliding with each other and to make the road easy and safe to cross for pedestrians.

--Traffic lights should be placed on busy highway intersections with accompanying pedestrian lanes for safer crossing. The traffic lights in Minglanilla should be put on again.

--Sufficient street lights should be put in place. Where can one see a four-lane highway with so many dim areas at night? This is really risky for pedestrians.— Concerned Citizen of Naga City
