Fugitive wounded in police pursuit

-

A MAN who escaped from Leyte Regional Prison was injured in a shootout with police in Barangay Bolinawan, Carcar City, Cebu last Saturday afternoon.

Climaco Alenton, who is facing drug and theft charges, sustained gunshot wounds in his right leg and thigh.

SPO3 Jorame Tanudtanud of Carcar City Police Station said they swooped down Sitio Cambuntan at 4 p.m. after being tipped of the fugitive’s presence.

Alenton escaped from a prison facility in Abuyog, Southern Leyte last Aug. 16 and went to Carcar City, where he lives.

When police arrived in the area, Alenton pulled out his firearm and opened fire after he saw them, Tanudtanud said.

The fugitive’s gun conked out, but this prompted SPO1 Irveng Avila to shoot him. Alenton was shot in the right leg and the bullet exited through his right thigh.

The responding policemen recovered a Smith and Wesson .38 special revolver without a serial number from his possession.

Alenton was rushed to the Carcar Provincial Hospital, but got transferred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.

As of yesterday, Alenton was still recuperating and already in stable condition, where two policemen were deployed to look out for him.

Tanudtanud, when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu, said the Abuyog Police Station coordinated with them after Alenton escaped three weeks ago.

He said they were only monitoring if the fugitive would go home until receiving a tip on Saturday.

Before Alenton got arrested in Leyte, Tanudtanud said he had been going in and out from

Carcar City Police Station.

“Kusog gyud ni siya mangawat sa una pa (He’d been a theft for a time now),” he said.

Tanudtanud said no- body from Alenton’s family and relatives visited him in the hospital since he was admitted.

“Wa siguro sila kauyon ani iyang gipangbuhat (Maybe they don’t like what he does),” he said, adding the police had been paying for the fugitive’s hospital expenses.

Tanudtanud said they will coordinate with Leyte Regional Prison if they want to bring Alenton back to the prison facility.

A complaint for illegal possession of firearms is expected to be filed against the fugitive on Tuesday.
