A FEMALE traffic enforcer died after she was hit by a Hyundai Tucson wagon driven by a Korean national.

The accident happened at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday on Gov. M. Cuenco Ave. in front of a shopping mall in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.

Joy Tumulak, City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) operations chief, said that traffic enforcer Maria Theresa Bascones, 38, died at 5 a.m. yesterday in the Perpetual Succor Hospital.

The car driver, identified as Sun Kyung Heo, 48, a businesswoman, is detained in the Cebu City Tourist Police Station pending the filing of a complaint against her.

Bascones was manning the traffic in the area when the accident happened.

According to the investigation of the traffic section, Kyung Heo was on her way out of the mall and had turned left on the Banilad-Talamban road when she hit the traffic enforcer.

Bascones sustained injuries and was taken by paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation to the hospital. She, however, died at dawn yesterday.

The Cebu City Government said it will assist the family of Bascones.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he tasked a team from his office to visit the family of Bascones to determine the assistance needed, apart from the burial and financial aid.

The mayor said he will wait for the resolution of the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council commending Bascones, who died in the line of duty.

Bascones started working with Citom as a parking aid in May 2002. She was promoted and became a traffic enforcer in January this year. Nheru Veraflor and Zash Marie del Pilar, USJ-R Mass Comm Interns
