What coaches can learn from Obach episode

OBACH who? Well, a few days back, a video of a priest berating a mother went viral and if you haven’t seen it, where have you been?

So what does a priest have to do with coaches?

Father Romeo Obach said he was just trying to impart his teaching but his language was just too strong. And that’s something some coaches can learn from.

Majority of the coaches I’ve seen talk crap in front of the kids and I’ve known some who were let go because their communication skills were not kid-friendly.

“Hastang bugo-a gyud nimo!” Ing-ana na lang gyud ka kutob?” (You’re really so stupid! Is that the best you can do?” That’s just something some coaches utter in the field.

It seems, some coaches, especially those from private schools, think that by treating kids this way, they show they are not afraid what the parents think.

I had a talk with one coach a long time ago, and he said he’d give any kid a dressing down, even in front of their parents, to show who’s in control.

He was in control, of course, but not for long because he was released.

Words are just words, right? But in the age of camera phones and keyboard warriors, I won’t be surprised if we see a clip of coaches being put in a bad light because of the words they utter.

This is what coaching seminars, teach too. Those who handle kids must know how to communicate well, and not just have that ability to bellow out an insult. “You’re so stupid!” It’s time to get rid of that bad habit if you don’t want to suffer the controversial priest’s fate.
