A well-rounded education about life
The controversial case that involved a Redemptorist priest and an unwed mother, and became viral on the Internet, has gathered sympathy for the teenager. However, in my opinion there was so much emotion spent against the messenger of God for being tactless. It missed altogether the message the prelate was trying to relay to the young community of this country.
It would have been more prudent for Fr. Romeo Obach to have incorporated the basic Christian doctrine in the seminar that is usually conducted hours before the baptism of a child.
His message was clear: premarital sex shows indiscretion and having a child out of wedlock puts one in a shameful situation.
According to Dr. Juan Antonio Perez, executive director of the Commission on Population, in a television interview with Serbisyo All Access on Solar News Channel, one out of 10 of Pinoy teenagers get pregnant and one out of three is believed to be engaging in premarital sex. The age range is 15 to 19 years old. Perez revealed that in the month of July, the Philippine population will be 100 million.
Ecologist Garrett Hardin asks which of the freedoms we currently enjoy—how to travel, where to live, what to eat and so on—will suffer if world population continues to increase at the present rate. This question was contained in a book How To Be Green, authored by John Button.
Hardin answered his own question, saying: “All of them… We must therefore question our normally unquestioned freedom to procreate… We need to think very carefully about our responsibility not to exceed the number of people that can be supported by the planet’s resources.”
In our country there is a move made by restaurants to offer only “half rice.” The law of economics regarding supply and demand controls the price of commodities.
“Since the advent of Aids we have had to learn to protect our health with safer sex, and people are increasingly recognizing that sexual freedom must be balanced with sexual responsibility,” Hardin also pointed out.
The ecologist then suggested that all aspects of sexual responsibility should be part of every child’s education.
