HAVING YOUR CAKE AND EATING IT, TOO

The local pastry culture often associates cakes with special occasions only. But that should not be the case, should it? Why, you can just munch your original creations to your heart’s content at the comfort of your own kitchen. But if you aren’t much into baking, then you can always hit the nearest pastry shop to satisfy your cravings.

April Miscala has mastered the art of baking at home for over 12 years now. After she formulated her debut offering, the “Chocolate Moist” with ganache filling,” she never stopped.

When she started to market online, the piece attracted a following. Her cupcakes did well too. The seasoned baker finally thought of displaying her outputs in a physical shop. A friend, Nap Nepomuceno, pitched in the idea, arrangemen­ts were baked and a cafe was a done deal later.

Big Bites Cakes & Pastries opened last Aug. 8 as a homey place of homemade pastry fare. Everyone is welcome regardless of class. The cozy set up, the neutral colors, the edible eye candies at the counter—nothing inside suggests intimidati­on.

Gracing the menu is the signature entry, the Chocolate Moist. April confessed there have been no changes in the recipe since day one. The best thing about the cake is that once it hits the palate, it becomes more than a cake. The presence of the ganache filling really manifests its sweetness as part of the cake.

April’s Black Forest cake is equally attractive, inside and out—a balance of sugar, chocolate, whipped cream, cherry and all the black forest goodness. Meanwhile, the chocolate coating naturally complement­s the gentle saccharine kick of the red velvet cake. Other readymade delights come in mango, ube, monster choco, super moist choco, super chocolate and mocha.

The cutesy edition is April’s set of “fairy” cupcakes, which comes in chocolate, lemon, banana, carrot, and red velvet flavors. Cookies and brownies are for chomping too!

All cakes are available in whole orders or in slices. Some are offered in boxes such as moist choco, mix mini cakes, banana pineapple, choco cupcakes and cheese cakes. Shelf life is a week given the right temperatur­e in the fridge.

Not only as a sweet haven but the cafe also dishes out allday rice meals such as Spanish

adobo, which comes with iced tea; light snacks such as “Big Bites Burger” (with iced tea), sandwiches, pasta, noodles and fries; and brews which include coffee, chocolate, frappe, fruit juice and fruit shakes. Bread and wines will be introduced soon. April customizes requests as well, depending on the client’s budget. Occasions accommodat­ed are weddings, birthdays and baptismal among others.
